Introduction to Christian Education
Foundations of Discipleship and Christian Formation
Christian education is ultimately concerned with the formation of faithful disciples who understand, embody, and communicate the teachings of Jesus Christ. Grounded in the Great Commission of Matthew 28:19–20, this graduate-level course examines the biblical, theological, philosophical, and educational foundations of Christian education and its essential relationship to discipleship.
Students will critically explore how the Church fulfills its teaching ministry across congregational, academic, ministry, and community contexts. Particular attention will be given to the purposes of Christian education, the process of spiritual formation, the role of the educator, and the development of learning environments that cultivate biblical understanding and faithful Christian practice.
Through scholarly engagement, theological reflection, and practical application, students will develop a comprehensive philosophy of Christian education that connects what we teach, why we teach, how we teach, and who learners are becoming. The course establishes the foundational framework for advanced study in Christian education and prepares graduate students to approach education as both a professional discipline and a vital expression of the Church's disciple-making mission.
